The $1099 front-runner was nice, but it was just not enough to warrant paying that much for so little space (and parking would have been $60 extra).
As it turns out, the place I will be calling home for at least the next year is where Tom Hanks called home in Sleepless in Seattle.
Specs:
- 850 sq ft. with west-facing 11×7 balcony big enough for 2 chairs, a coffee table, and beer
- it’s not on Lake Union, per Tom Hanks, but it is one block from the lake, with a wonderful view of it
- 12×13 bedroom with 3×10 walk-in closet for all of my pointy-toed shoes
- west-facing windows for those lonely but marvelous sunsets when I trudge back home from work
- $1050, which includes water/sewage/garbage, cable television, and 1 parking space (electricity will be about $30/month)
- 1 block from the bus stop, which means I can save $75 - $20 = $50/month by taking the bus instead of driving during the months I’m rotating at the university
I don’t think I could have done much better than $950/month, and anyway that would have meant compromising on space, or balcony, or west-facing windows. I did have to make a few small compromises:
- kitchen range is not gas; but at 8×9, it is large enough to maneuver, with new appliances and granite counter tops
- there is no in-unit washer/dryer; but there is a laundry room about 15′ from my door, and it is only shared with 4 other units
- no hardwood floors; but the carpeting is all new
So all in all, a pretty good deal.,
