Some findings from the paper “Gender Differences in Mate Selection: Evidence from a Speed Dating Experiment” by Ray Fisman et al.:

  • Males put 18% more weight on physical attractiveness than females do.
  • Females put more weight on intelligence.
  • Men prefer women with a level of intelligence or ambition that is comparable to (but not greater than) their own.
  • Women prefer partners from more a­ffluent neighborhoods.
  • Both men and women prefer partners who grew up in a less densely populated area.
  • Women are 14% more likely (compared to a base rate of 38%) to prefer a partner of the same race.
