The running here is definitely not as nice, especially with the unremitting fog cover. But I’m trying.

We All Scream for Ice Cream Sandwiches

They’re not just for kids anymore — ice cream sandwiches are popping up on dessert menus all around the Bay Area.

“They’re an approachable dessert, and reminiscent of childhood,” says Andrea Maunter, pastry chef at Two in San Francisco.

At Two (22 Hawthorne St., at Howard; 415-777-9779), the more laid-back successor to Hawthorne Lane, Maunter has come up with decadent variations of the dessert: a trio of homemade mini ice cream sandwiches. This best-selling signature item consists of the traditional chocolate chip with vanilla ice cream, brownie with fresh mint chip, and macadamia chunk cookies with coconut ice cream.

Sam’s Chowder House (4210 North Cabrillo Highway, Half Moon Bay, 650-712-0245) incorporated the sweet treats to go along with their casual ocean setting. Simple yet indulgent chocolate cookies surround vanilla ice cream, dipped in chocolate and topped with toasted pistachios.

In Sebastopol, West County Grill (6948 Sebastopol Ave., Sebastopol, 707-829-9500) has been serving ice cream sandwiches since opening in March, and they’re now a permanent fixture on the dessert menu. You can satisfy your craving with flavors like chocolate chip espresso or ginger snap vanilla.

Also in Sonoma County, Harvest Moon Cafe (47 First St. West., Sonoma, 707-933-8160) struck gold with the very popular malted milk chocolate ice cream sandwich (pictured above) made with meringue cookies, a rich yet delicate dessert for any warm summer day.
